Abdominoplasty

Abdominal deformations caused by aging, gravity, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle and birth are quite annoying for many people. Although many people who feel uncomfortable about it want to achieve regional improvements by doing sports, unfortunately there are very few who can achieve this. However, abdominoplasty which is widely carried out today is an important alternative for people who cannot afford to do sports for long periods of time.

Why is abdominoplasty done?

Some of the major reasons for abdominoplasty today are;

  • Sagging due to rapid weight loss and weight gain
  • Sagging that accompanies ageing and
  • Sagging after delivery.

Especially after birth, many women want to get rid of abdominal excess and opt to have abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty which is considered to be in the minor risk group can also involve some risks like all surgery. One of these risks is infection as a complication that can occur in every surgery. Apart from this, abdominoplasty has virtually no other risks and therefore it is one of the most preferred aesthetic operations by many women.

So, who can undergo abdominoplasty? First of all, abdominoplasty is not a method for young people. In addition, if the person undertaking surgery is not suitable for the operation in terms of weight, the patient is asked to lose weight first. This is to ensure that the abdominoplasty delivers the desired level of results. Furthermore, if the patient is a smoker, he is asked to quit smoking at least 1 month in advance. In fact he is even instructed not to smoke for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Otherwise, the patient’s healing process may be prolonged.

What are the types of abdominoplasty?

Nowadays, abdominoplasty which is preferred by many people is generally carried out in 2 ways. These are the mini and full abdominonplasty versions.

  • Mini abdominoplastyIf the deformed area is located below the navel and there is slight fat and sagging in this area and if there is no separation and loosening of the abdominal muscles, a mini-abdominal surgery is more appropriate. This procedure is more suitable for people who are not suitable for full abdominoplasty and who do not have excess weight in the abdominal region. It is especially applied to postnatal individuals who have excess fat and subcutaneous tissue accumulated below the navel after birth. In the operation, the excess fat in the abdomen and waist area is removed, the excess tissue below the navel is removed and tightening is applied. No procedure is carried out above navel.
  • Full abdominoplasty: This operation method is applied in cases where the problems described above are observed in the area above the navel. The operation is carried out above the navel, between the groin and the abdominal area. All stretch marks, sagging and excess fat tissue in this area are removed. Then the abdominal muscles are tightened and the skin is fully stretched.

Considerations after abdominoplasty

After abdominoplasty surgery, the person comes around no more than 1 or 2 hours later. Patients discharged the next day should avoid any movement that can force the abdomen and refrain from lifting heavy items. Furthermore, wearing a corset for 6 weeks after the surgery will be recommended by the doctor. After 10 days the sutures are removed and the patient can have her first bath 4 days after the operation.
