Gynecomasty

Excessive breast development in men is called Gynecomasty. The word derives from Greek. One out of three men are afflicted with Gynecomasty. It is most commonly encountered during adolescence. It is not harmful to health. However, in terms of appearance, it is not an attractive look for a man’s chest. This causes discomfort in men over time. It is a known fact that appearance is often an important element affecting psychology.

Gynecomasty is not a self-healing condition. It requires medical attention. In general, drug treatment is applied. In cases where drug treatment is not efficient, surgical intervention is necessary. Gynecomasty, which often occurs in boys during adolescence, causes distress and embarrassment in many young men.

Causes of Gynecomasty

Gynecomasty is caused by the disorder and imbalance of the hormones of adolescent men. The proportion of estrogen and testosterone hormones causes breast growth. In one aspect, breast growth caused by hormones is natural. In addition to hormones,  gynecomasty is also caused by a number of disorders.

There are hormones that determine the gender characteristics of both sexes. These hormones reveal the sexual differences of men and women. Men have fewer female hormones and women have less male hormones. When the balance of estrogen hormone increases in men, some features of the female body may be manifested.

Drugs that can cause gynecomasty

It is known that while drugs are used to treat some diseases, the side effects can cause other disorders. Drugs that cause gynecomasty can be listed as follows.

  1. Anti androgen drugs, used to treat prostate cancer. In other words, it can cause gynecomasty.
  2. Antidepressants that alter the body’s hormone balance,
  3. Some antibiotics,
  4. Chemotherapy drugs,
  5. Calcium-containing heart medications

In addition to these medications the causes of gynecomasty include alcohol, heroin, amphetamines, marijuana. In addition, kidney failure, tumors, thyroid hormone disorders, excessive starvation of the body can cause this condition.

Symptoms of Gynecomasty

Gynecomasty or breast enlargement that occurs in men is manifested by swelling, tenderness and pain. In particular, adolescents need to observe their own development correctly. Although there is no health hazard, it is more beneficial to intervene as soon as growth begins.

Gynecomasty Treatment

Gynecomasty is detected by palpation. A hard mass is encountered in the nipple area. If such a condition is detected, a doctor should be consulted. Disorders manifested by all tests are treated by an endocrinologist. The diameter of the breast is an important factor in the treatment of the condition.

In gynecomasty, which occurs and is diagnosed during puberty, drug treatment is prescribed if the hardness in the nipple area is between 4 and 6 cm. If the size exceeds six centimeters, the size is modified to the required size by a surgical procedure.

Medical treatments are determined according to the age of the patient. At the same time, if the cause of the condition is another issue, this is taken into consideration in the drug treatment. Drug therapy is effective in gynecomasty within two weeks. The patient undergoing treatment is required to see a doctor once per month. This should continue after the procedure as prescribed by the doctor.

A specialist doctor decides the procedure method in surgical treatment. The most valid method in gynecomasty is surgical intervention. Hardness at one end is completely eliminated. Excess fat tissue and skin is removed. Liposuction is used to remove the tissue during the procedure. Thus, patient acquires a breast size that is commensurate with his age.
